The Virtual Events Co-Chair is a volunteer Officer position on the OWCA Executive Board.

Position Details

  • Length of term: 2 years (June 2024 to December 2025)
  • Time commitment: 5-10 hours per month (includes synchronous and asynchronous work)
  • Renewable?: No
  • Elected by: OWCA membership

Qualifications

We welcome your application regardless of your prior experience with virtual event planning. The Executive Board will support you as a new Board member and help you to implement your ideas. 

You should apply for this position if you:

  • Would like to develop/hone skills in planning, organizing, and executing virtual events programming.
  • Would enjoy collaborating with presenters to provide dynamic events for the online writing center community. 
  • Have ideas for developing new kinds of virtual events.

Responsibilities

If elected, you would serve 1 year as Virtual Events Co-Chair, followed by 1 year as Virtual Events Chair.

Year 1: Virtual Events Co-Chair

As Virtual Events Co-Chair, you would do the following within your monthly time commitment:

  • Work closely with the Virtual Events Chair and receive mentoring as needed
  • Attend Virtual Events Committee meetings and lead the meetings when the Virtual Events Chair is not available
  • Coordinate with the Virtual Events Chair on the tasks and deadlines of the Virtual Events Committee.
  • Help work with the Diversity & Social Justice Committee to recruit presenters, with the Accessibility Committee to implement accessible presentations, and with the Website Coordinators to advertise events throughout the year.
  • Attend monthly Executive Board meetings to help report on your committee’s progress, review items that need Board feedback/approval, and vote on Board and committee projects

Year 2: Virtual Events Chair

As Virtual Events Chair, you would do the following within your monthly time commitment:

  • Work closely with the incoming Virtual Events Co-Chair and mentor them as needed
  • Chair the Virtual Events Committee, which involves scheduling and leading committee meetings, delegating tasks to committee members for both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration, and organizing committee files
  • Lead the recruitment of presenters for virtual events.
  • Work with the Diversity & Social Justice Committee to recruit presenters, with the Accessibility Committee to implement accessible presentations, and with the Website Coordinators to advertise events throughout the year.
  • Attend monthly Executive Board meetings to report on your committee’s progress, review items that need Board feedback/approval, and vote on Board and committee projects

The Virtual Events Committee

In the past, the Virtual Events Committee has worked synchronously and asynchronously to accomplish the following:

  • Brainstormed and researched ideas for new events.
  • Recruited presenters for multiple virtual events in conjunction with the Diversity & Social Justice Committee.
  • Worked with presenters to develop dynamic, accessible presentations.
  • Launched a virtual Reading Club to provide a venue to discuss writing center scholarship and network with other writing center professionals.
  • Collaborated with other professional organizations to execute co-sponsored events.
  • Created a Post-Event Accessibility Task Force to increase the accessibility of recorded presentation materials posted to the OWCA website.
  • Drafted a Call for Presenters for future Webinars.
