SUMMARY:Reading Club: Why I Call It the Academic Ghetto
DESCRIPTION:Reading club provides a space to discuss writing center scholarship. Based on the article or chapter chosen\, participants will share experiences\, ideas\, strategies\, and questions about online writing centers (OWCs). This Reading Club will discuss “Why I Call It the Academic Ghetto: A Critical Examination of Race\, Place\, and Writing Centers” by Alexandria Lockett in Praxis: A Writing Center Journal. \nReading Abstract\n“This article investigates my lived experience as a black queer writing center tutor for the purposes of theorizing the transformative power of learning centers. Drawing on several perspectives and methods offered in Praxis’s special issue on Access and Equity in Graduate Writing Support\, this article argues that the antiracist potential of writing centers depends on more comprehensive analyses of how writing centers function as racialized places. Using the metaphor of the “academic ghetto\,” I signify on the misconception of writing centers as places for correcting deficiency. I apply my analysis to both an Undergraduate Writing Center (WCs) and a Graduate Writing Center (GWC) space to systematically discover how racial biases mediate and construct these learning spaces. In particular\, I structure my discussion through a blend of personal narrative and critical analysis that illustrates the epistemic conflict and character of the “academic ghetto.” The article concludes with a call to invent antiracist practices for writing centers that model more inclusive methods of living in these spaces.” \nGuidelines for Participating\nReading Club is currently held in a Zoom Pro room. Participation is open to everyone\, including not-yet OWCA members. To ensure a safe space for open communication and interaction\, these sessions will not be recorded. \nRegister\nYou can register for a reading club through the scheduling system below. Follow these steps: \n\nSelect your time zone from the drop-down menu\nClick the “Register” button next to the event you’d like to attend\nFill out the registration form and click “Complete Registration”\nSave your confirmation email to have the Zoom information or cancel your registration later. SUMMARY:Reading Club: Rhetoric of Labor Activism in Writing Centers
DESCRIPTION:Reading club provides a space to discuss writing center scholarship. Based on the article or chapter chosen\, participants will share experiences\, ideas\, strategies\, and questions about online writing centers (OWCs). This Reading Club will discuss “Toward a Rhetoric of Labor Activism in College and University Writing Centers” by Liliana M. Naydan in Praxis: A Writing Center Journal. \nReading Abstract\nThis essay considers the present degree of the writing center field’s engagement with labor activism in the age of the corporate university and argues that writing center practitioners are well positioned to reconstitute their identities: to re-envision themselves and their colleagues as poised to engage in activist rhetorics and live lives as academic activists. By employing a rhetoric of labor activism and thereby addressing labor issues in more robust ways alongside professional organizations that represent them\, writing centers can work to revitalize shared governance and academic freedom\, both of which are threatened by corporatizing forces\, and they can influence emergent institutional and professional histories. \nGuidelines for Participating\nReading Club is currently held in a Zoom Pro room. Participation is open to everyone\, including not-yet OWCA members. To ensure a safe space for open communication and interaction\, these sessions will not be recorded. \nRegister\nYou can register for a reading club through the scheduling system below. SUMMARY:OWCC Webinar | Racial Justice and Online Writing Center Praxis
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\nDate: October 2\, 2020\, 4-5:30pm EST\nPresenter: Zandra L. Jordan\nTitle: “Racial Justice and Online Writing Center Praxis”\nHosting Organization: Online Writing Centers Community\n\nEvent Description\nIn this webinar\, participants will explore the ways our commitments to antiracism and racial justice can translate into online writing center praxis. Zandra will share ways that her identity informs her ethics and invite participants to explore their own values and the commitments that shape the identities of their writing centers. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to promoting racial justice through writing center practice\, the webinar will stress that by examining our shared commitments and values\, we can think through our individual contexts and determine strategies for action. \nThe first step is to develop a clear ethic: we need to recognize and account for race in our writing center work and then question what a justice-oriented approach should look like. This is particularly important in our current moment when so many writing centers have shifted to online delivery and the nation is reeling from ongoing racialized violence and persistent systemic racism. The webinar will therefore recommend strategies for ensuring that our practices and engagement with writers through the online medium are promoting racial justice. \nWebinar participants will: \n\nInquire about their ethics and values around antiracism and racial justice\nRecognize that neither asynchronous nor synchronous online writing center interactions are neutral\nReflect on how attitudes around race and difference are encoded into the language we use when giving verbal and written feedback\nAcknowledge the unique challenges with and opportunities for racial justice in an online writing center\nTailor an ethic of racial justice to their particular contexts\n\nASL Interpreting and Recording\nAmerican Sign Language interpretation will be provided. This webinar will be recorded and posted in our Events Archive. Please see our participation guidelines.
