SUMMARY:Reading Club: Where We Are: AI and Writing
DESCRIPTION:Reading club provides a space to discuss writing center scholarship. Based on the articles or chapters chosen\, participants will share experiences\, ideas\, strategies\, and questions about online writing centers (OWCs). \nReading Abstract\nFebruary’s reading club discussion will be a little different. This month\, we’re asking participants to “read around” some recent publications concerning generative AI and writing. Choose one or more articles from the “Where We Are: AI and Writing” section of Composition Studies 51.1 and/or from the upcoming Computers and Composition 71 and come ready to discuss what you’ve read. Through this “read around\,” participants become familiar with their chosen text(s) through thorough reading or skimming. We’re hoping this approach will help facilitate a discussion around multiple dimensions of this burgeoning issue. \nGuidelines for Participating\nReading Club is currently held in a Zoom Pro room. Participation is open to everyone\, including not-yet OWCA members. To ensure a safe space for open communication and interaction\, these sessions will not be recorded. \nRegister\nYou can register for a reading club through the scheduling system below. Follow these steps: \n\nSelect your time zone from the drop-down menu\nClick the “Register” button next to the event you’d like to attend\nFill out the registration form and click “Complete Registration”\nSave your confirmation email to have the Zoom information or cancel your registration later. You can also respond to this email to contact the event organizers.\n\nA reminder email will also be sent the morning of the event.

SUMMARY:Reading Club: Tell Me What You Really Think: Lessons from Negative Student Feedback
DESCRIPTION:Reading club provides a space to discuss writing center scholarship. Based on the article or chapter chosen\, participants will share experiences\, ideas\, strategies\, and questions about online writing centers (OWCs). June’s reading club discussion will focus on “Tell Me What You Really Think: Lessons from Negative Student Feedback” by Mary Hedengren & Martin Lockerd published in The Writing Center Journal. A copy of the article will be available for registered participants.\nReading Abstract\n\n“This study investigates negative feedback received via exit surveys completed by students who participated in over 11\,000 writing center consultations. Although the feedback was overwhelmingly positive\, the researchers mined negative comments for patterns—and note the value of negative feedback in helping writing centers assess and improve our practice. A key finding in the study is the prevalence of negative comments regarding what the researchers term “non-directive non-productivity”: students’ perception that some consultations guided by principles of non-directivity improve neither their product nor their process.”\n\nGuidelines for Participating\nReading Club is currently held in a Zoom Pro room. SUMMARY:Reading Club: Why Writers Choose Asynchronous Online Tutoring
DESCRIPTION:Reading club provides a space to discuss writing center scholarship. Based on the article or chapter chosen\, participants will share experiences\, ideas\, strategies\, and questions about online writing centers (OWCs). This Reading Club will discuss “Why Writers Choose Asynchronous Online Tutoring: Issues of Access and Inclusion” by Lisa Eastmond Bell\, Adam Brantley\, & Madison Van Vleet in WLN: A Journal of Writing Center Scholarship. \nReading Abstract\n“To effectively support writers\, writing centers should know who uses tutoring at their locale and why. As Lori Salem notes\, ‘[T]he decision to use or not use the writing center offers us a unique window into the writing center’ (150)\, and these decisions often encompass ‘personal preferences’ as well as ‘broader social factors’ (149). Questions about who uses tutoring and why are not new\, but they have not always included online tutoring. As a writing center administrator and undergraduate writing tutors\, we wanted to better understand who used our program’s asynchronous online screencast tutoring and why these writers chose to use online tutoring. To do so\, we conducted an IRB-approved study examining the demographic differences between writers participating in online versus in-person tutorials\, the primary reasons writers chose online tutoring\, and the ways online tutoring met or did not meet writers’ preferences or needs.” \nGuidelines for Participating\nReading Club is currently held in a Zoom Pro room. Participation is open to everyone\, including not-yet OWCA members. To ensure a safe space for open communication and interaction\, these sessions will not be recorded. \nRegister\nYou can register for a reading club through the scheduling system below. SUMMARY:Reading Club: Why I Call It the Academic Ghetto
DESCRIPTION:Reading club provides a space to discuss writing center scholarship. Based on the article or chapter chosen\, participants will share experiences\, ideas\, strategies\, and questions about online writing centers (OWCs). This Reading Club will discuss “Why I Call It the Academic Ghetto: A Critical Examination of Race\, Place\, and Writing Centers” by Alexandria Lockett in Praxis: A Writing Center Journal. \nReading Abstract\n“This article investigates my lived experience as a black queer writing center tutor for the purposes of theorizing the transformative power of learning centers. Drawing on several perspectives and methods offered in Praxis’s special issue on Access and Equity in Graduate Writing Support\, this article argues that the antiracist potential of writing centers depends on more comprehensive analyses of how writing centers function as racialized places. Using the metaphor of the “academic ghetto\,” I signify on the misconception of writing centers as places for correcting deficiency. I apply my analysis to both an Undergraduate Writing Center (WCs) and a Graduate Writing Center (GWC) space to systematically discover how racial biases mediate and construct these learning spaces. In particular\, I structure my discussion through a blend of personal narrative and critical analysis that illustrates the epistemic conflict and character of the “academic ghetto.” The article concludes with a call to invent antiracist practices for writing centers that model more inclusive methods of living in these spaces.” \nGuidelines for Participating\nReading Club is currently held in a Zoom Pro room. SUMMARY:Reading Club: Rhetoric of Labor Activism in Writing Centers
DESCRIPTION:Reading club provides a space to discuss writing center scholarship. Based on the article or chapter chosen\, participants will share experiences\, ideas\, strategies\, and questions about online writing centers (OWCs). This Reading Club will discuss “Toward a Rhetoric of Labor Activism in College and University Writing Centers” by Liliana M. Naydan in Praxis: A Writing Center Journal. \nReading Abstract\nThis essay considers the present degree of the writing center field’s engagement with labor activism in the age of the corporate university and argues that writing center practitioners are well positioned to reconstitute their identities: to re-envision themselves and their colleagues as poised to engage in activist rhetorics and live lives as academic activists. By employing a rhetoric of labor activism and thereby addressing labor issues in more robust ways alongside professional organizations that represent them\, writing centers can work to revitalize shared governance and academic freedom\, both of which are threatened by corporatizing forces\, and they can influence emergent institutional and professional histories.
